The nasone is made of cast iron.
It is 3.6’ tall and its diameter is 1.1’. It weighs 200 pounds.

The nozzle of all the nasoni, either old or new, has a hole on its back. Obstructing the main output with a finger makes the water gush upwards: in this way drinking is very easy, and very hygienic too, although few non-Romans are aware of this simple trick. You will see many visitors struggling in the most uncomfortable positions in trying to reach the rather low nozzle.

Although cast iron heats up very easily under the sun, the water poured by these fountains is always cool, as it keeps constantly running. Throughout the hot summer months, the refreshing comfort that the nasoni provide is welcomed by Romans and tourists alike.
